Artist and painter, born in London, where he continues to live and work in Hackney Wick. Ben Wakeling’s works its between abstraction and figuration, exploring the complexities of mental health, identity and human vulnerability. Rooted in a background in graffiti and street art, his paintings are defined by gestural mark-making, layered surfaces and obscured figures that emerge through semi-opaque fields of colour. Working instinctively, Wakeling’s practice is shaped by personal experience and an ongoing dialogue with mental health, both within his own life and through his work with others. His compositions often hold a tension between control and release,where a delicate line meets raw, expressive energy.
