JESS MURPHY
London-based artist Jess Murphy is drawn to the primal nature and infinite malleability of clay. With a background creating sets and spaces in the fashion world, Jess’s ceramics practice provides a counter-balance to the impermanence and relentless pace of this industry.
Form is central to Jess’s strong, surreal works. Referencing tones, textures and shapes from nature, her bony, fleshy forms are an exploration of clay as a medium, challenging and reinterpreting what we view as natural and graceful.
Jess works with just two clay bodies — a coarse white stoneware and terracotta. Left almost entirely without decoration, the raw clay surface is instead textured or burnished, imbuing the sculptural forms with spirit and movement.
All works are hand built in her Hackney studio.
