Artist Julie Nelson uses the materiality of clay as a means to explore naturally occurring patterns and repetitions. Random variation is achieved by hand building in stoneware and porcelain with layers of slip, porcelain and matt glazes that accentuate elemental and microscopic detail within the surface texture.
Julie’s interest in the natural world was encouraged by a childhood spent on the coast collecting pebbles and shells on days out. This has led to an abiding interest in the connectedness of our environment and we who inhabit it.
Julie specialised in ceramics for her B.A. design degree in London, which was followed by exhibitions in the USA and Europe. She has now returned to living on the coast and works from her studio in Brighton. This coastal setting has informed her work and inspired her to develop installations that continue the theme and variation of nature patterns.
