lana matsuyama

Lana Matsuyama is a Japanese-American multi-disciplinary contemporary artist, designer and art director. She specialises in abstract mixed media paintings, drawings, and sculptures that explore themes such as the incomplete nature of the creative process, humans as makers and how what we make forms our identities, and the individual and collective marks we leave on our surroundings whilst we live and create

'I study the transient and incomplete nature of art making and seek to expose the creative process asa practice of building/demolition, creation/destruction, birth/decay, and growth/erosion, as mirrored in urban manmade environments, nature, and identity. What do we leave behind, and does that make us who we are?'.

Influenced by her Japanese heritage, she embraces simplicity, minimalism, as well as the inherently imperfect, incomplete, and impermanent—popularised in the West as 'wabi-sabi'. Hovering between intention and impulse, her work is evidence of an intellectual journey and creative release through a tireless exploration of matter, composition, dimension and texture
