Mary West’s practice explores light, space, and texture through landscape painting, moving fluidly between abstraction and figuration. Memories of place form the starting point for each composition, with each painting emerging as an emotional response to landscape and shared encounters. Working primarily in oils, she allows the material to guide the process, embracing chance, gestural mark-making, and the unpredictability of paint. The work is created quickly and intuitively, building layered surfaces that suggest movement, atmosphere, and depth.
