Sophie Roland is a ceramicist who studied sculpture and painting in Paris. She now works and develops her creation in her studio in Romainville.
Each of her pieces is sculptural and unique. She uses the clay coil technique to form the object as it goes along. Sophie Roland is drawn to black stoneware, smooth or with chamotte. The pieces can be left raw and unglazed to see and feel the texture of the earth, or glazed, most of the time in black, white or green.
Roland mainly draws her inspiration from the nature of volcanoes, a landscape she knows well from her time spent in Auvergne. Her work revisits the idea of the container to make unique objects with a visual and plastic presence.
